As of this moment, this campaign is now 333% funded! Thank you all so much! Some updates to the campaign:
Finalized the variants that will be available at $3.5k, $4k, and $4.5k. Each will have a gold plated finish and alternate colors with a soft, pearlescent shimmer finish. The mock-ups are available below!
Additionally, I'm nearly complete with the line art for the Smilodon print that has now been unlocked! The final artwork will be available August 4th. Here's a peek at the progress:
So, why the smilodon? Mostly on a personal level, they're simply my favorite extinct animal, and I have a lot of great memories attached to them. When I was young living in southern California my family would take my fossil-obsessed self to the La Brea Tar Pits often where thousands of these awesome creatures were found, alongside other extinct mammals of their day. The George C. Page Museum is next to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art If you've never been there, there's some awesome sculpture and relief artwork outside the museums. (You can read more about the LACMA and Page Museum's exterior installations here.) I remember smelling the tar lake pit as we'd drive down Wilshire Boulevard. In the illustration, I imagined a (possibly inaccurate) large cat walking among tall, ancient sequoias - Sequoia and Redwoods also being a fond childhood memory of mine. Essentially, these animals coupled with poppies and tall trees feel like home to me.
Cool Smilodon facts:
- Scientists believe from fossil bones the smilodon could roar similar to a modern-day lion's roar, although much louder.
- The smilodon has no direct descendants today.
- The teeth can reach up to 11 inches in length, about the same length as a tyrannosaur tooth.
- On average the animal may have weighed over 650 lbs. Largest of the species may have weighed nearly 900 lbs. and stood nearly 40 inches tall.
- The Smilodon is one of over 100 species of saber-toothed cats, or the felidae subfamily Machairodontinae. Other saber-toothed cats include Dinofelis and Homotherium.
